Gardening isn’t easy.
Life lessons are available daily – if you commit to paying attention throughout the growing process.
Here’s 3 things I think you should understand:
- All plants should not be treated the same. Some need direct sunlight and others don’t. Make sure you place your plants based on the type of environment needed. Also, pay attention to which plants are companions, such as basil and tomatoes. Planting them near each other can make your harvest thrive. Life: Just like people, it makes sense to get to know their individual characteristics before deciding how you will treat them.
- Pay attention to the warning signs. Yellow leaves can mean too much water or not enough light. Limp leaves could mean your non-direct sun plants are getting too much light exposure. They give you signs to let you know something needs to change. The earlier you recognize the signs; the better your chances of saving your plant. Life: People show early warning signs when something is wrong – catching them early enough could be life changing for the both of you.
- Remove the toxic few to save the healthy. Some leaves may die on healthy plants, such as cucumber vines and mustard leaves, that need to be pinched off to save your plant. In raised beds, if a plant is dying get rid of it and focus on keeping your box healthy. If a plant has become infested in your outdoor plot, remove it root and all to protect the rest of your harvest in the plot. Life: Similar to how the people around you have an impact on your overall well being; removing energy that depletes you can save your life.
